Can Coffee Help Weight Loss?

We can all agree that coffee has its benefits such as keeping you awake but can coffee help weight loss too? According to a new British study, coffee may help us fight obesity and achieve weight loss.

Coffee Stimulates Thermogenesis to Help Weight Loss

To begin with, the study found that coffee stimulates a process called thermogenesis, a heat-generating form of fat that burns calories. This type of fat is also known as “brown fat”.

“This is the first study in humans to show that something like a cup of coffee can have a direct effect on our brown fat functions,” said study leader Michael Symonds, of the University of Nottingham.

Obesity Is On the Rise

Symonds explained that the results are big because we are having an obesity epidemic in our society and diabetes is on the rise. However, one expert says it is too early to label coffee as a weight loss alternative.

“Usually thermogenic properties are too minimal and insignificant” to help someone go from overweight to normal weight, explained registered dietitian Sharon Zarabi. She directs the bariatrics program at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

Brown Fat Burns Fat to Aid Weight Loss

Nevertheless, brown fat works different than other fats because it produces heat by burning fat and sugar. Increasing its activity can help weight loss by controlling blood sugar and burning extra calories.

During the study, scientists were able to image someone right after they had coffee to see if the brown fat got hotter. Since the results were positive, the next step is to figure out which component of coffee activates the brown fat.

Once the researchers find what component is responsible for the brown fat then it could possibly be used as a weight management supplement.

To say the least, coffee should not be used as a weight loss alternative. If you do drink to coffee to lose weight, drink it black.

The study was published June 24 in the journal Scientific Reports.
