Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig Top Diet Plans for Weight Loss

Individuals seeking long-term weight loss should think about trying Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig, as a review of clinical trials ranks them top diet plans in a study (Ann. Intern. Med., 2015). Weight loss is a $2.5 billion growing industry with more than a third of adults obese in the United States. That is why commercial weight loss programs have become so popular but doctors still haven’t had much information to recommended specific programs.

Jennifer Hudson Weight Watchers - Weight Loss

In the trial that lasted one year, Weight Watcher participants had at least a 2.6 percent greater weight loss than those who received only education. People who used Jenny Craig lost 4.9 percent more weight at 1 year compared to those who underwent education and counseling. Other weight-loss programs such as Nutrisystem resulted in a 3.8 percent greater fat loss, while Atkins had a 0.1% to 2.9% fat loss at 12 months.

I believe that weight loss programs that help individuals restrict calories with a strategic approach to making healthier diet choices is key to long-term weight loss. Other fat loss programs that focus strictly on supplements or prepackaged meals are not successful as Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig. Gudzune and researchers highlighted that “structure and intensity of contact” are highly correlated with program success.

Although diet and exercise are the key factors to weight loss, it seems that frequent coaching and making smart diet choices is what effects long-term weight loss the most. Clinicians may now consider referring obese or overweight patients to Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers as they are reviewed as top diet plans. Programs such as Nutrisystem, demonstrate promising fat-loss results; however, further research analyzing long-term weight loss outcomes are required.

Belly Fat Increased by Diet Sodas

Do you love diet sodas but still want to lose belly fat? If so, drinking diet sodas may not be a good idea according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. Researchers discovered that people who drank diet soda gained nearly 3 times the belly fat over 9 years as those who did not consume diet soda (J AM Geriatr Soc 2015).

Diet Soda Linked to Belly Fat

According to the Journal of the American Geriatric Society, people who drank diet soda gained about 3 times the belly fat over 9 years. ClipArt Photo

In the study, 749 individuals ages 65 and older were asked, every few years, how many cans of soda they consumed a day, and how many of those sodas were diet or regular.

The results were very predictive of abdominal-fat gain, even after the researchers adjusted for factors like smoking, levels of physical activity and diabetes. Individuals who did not drink diet soda gained approximately 0.8 in. around the waistline over the study period, but the ones who consumed diet soda every day gained 3.2 in. The people who fell between – occasional drinkers of diet soda – gained nearly 1.8 in.

This is quite shocking news to me because I always believed that diet sodas were a healthy choice for weight loss but now research shows it increases belly fat over time for women over 40 and 65. Visceral fat – the fat that surrounds the abdominal organs- is associated with increased cardiovascular disease, type-2 diabetes and inflammation which make this kind of fat the most dangerous. These findings, which authors refer to as “striking,” add to the rising body of evidence that no- and low-calorie sweeteners may contain some health concerns.

“Regular sugar has caloric consequences,” says the study’s senior author Dr. Helen Hazuda, professor of medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. And one of those is that it triggers satiety – a sense of fullness or satisfaction. “Your body is use to knowing that a sweet taste means you are ingesting energy in the form of calories that, if you don’t burn them off, is going to convert to fat,” she says. Artificial sweeteners, however, confuse our bodies and weaken the link in our brains between sweetness and calories. That, Hazuda says, can lead to weight gain and cravings for sweeter and sweeter treats.

On the other hand, the Caloric Control Council, an association that represents the reduced-caloric food and beverage industry- disagreed with the study’s finding. “The use of low-calorie sweeteners in fat loss have been shown to have benefits,” the group mentioned.

Researchers found that the belly-fat gain was most common in people who were already overweight. Hazuda says when people think they’re doing something good by drinking artificially sweetened drinks, it’s “actually totally counterproductive.” For the most part, if you are seeking to lose belly fat, it would be a wise idea to reduce those diet sodas and choose a healthier diet choice such as natural fruit juice or water for fat loss.

Burn Fat by Drinking Red Wine

Red wine or even grape juice is not only good for lowering your blood pressure but it can also help you burn fat and lose weight. According to a new study at Oregon State University, red wine could spark fat burning when consumed in moderation (Okla, Meshail et al. 2015).

Red Wine - Burn Fat

Muscadine grape phytochemicals (MGP) found in red wine, has been show to help burn fat. Photo The Peregrine Reads

In the study, mice were fed a 60 percent high-fat diet plus given muscadine grape phytochemicals (MGP), a compound found in red wine for 10 weeks. Researchers found that MGP significantly reduced visceral fat mass or helped burn fat and that ellagic acid was a major component in removing fatty acids from liver cells. Neil Shay, PhD, a professor of food science technology at Oregon State University and the study’s lead author suggests, “ellagic acid may constitute a consumer-friendly dietary strategy that may be effective in reducing lipid accumulation and burning fat both in adipose tissue and liver.” I admire this idea because it’s a more natural approach to losing weight instead of the everyday fat loss-promoting supplements.

Venus Factor is a great fat loss system for women and it focuses on controlling the leptin hormone that signals hunger to your brain. Fat loss for women is very difficult than it is for men and this system only focuses on weight loss for women. I personally love grapes and its compound ellagic acid, has also been shown to slow the growth of tumors and eliminate cancer cells which are amazing health benefits.

This new study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry could give way to new dietary strategies for reducing fat in the liver using just natural fruits like grapes. I never knew that drinking red wine had such great fat burning qualities but if it helps to burn fat and lose weight, then why not have a glass of red wine in moderation?

Bryn Mawr College Apologizes After ‘Fat Shaming’ Weight Loss Emails

Colleges have a major concern about the health of their students, so schools and institutions offer weight loss programs and facilities as well. However, students at Bryn Mawr College find an email for students with “elevated BMIs”, to be a shameful weight loss invitation (Wood 2015).

Weight Loss at Bryn Mawr College

Students at Bryn Mawr College received a weight loss e-mail invitation to a free, individualized fitness program. Fat Loss

According to Philly.com, 100 emails were sent out as an invitation to participate in a free, individualized fitness program. I honestly don’t see anything wrong with this as it provides an option for students to lose weight. “There were truly good intentions behind this,” said Bryn Mawr spokesman Matt Gray. “It’s a program that includes individual counseling, nutritional advice, and group support.”

Gray mentioned that twelve students had already gone through with the program since its launch in October and no one complained. Unfortunately, the invitations got into the wrong hands and a student felt offended. Rudrani Sarma, pre-law junior who is not obese, received one of those emails and made negative posts on Facebook that went viral.

She received an apology from the health center and was told her name was incorrectly included by a nurse. Buzzfeed, a popular viral news website, picked up the story and Sarma was reached by phone. She said “Body policing and fat shaming are both involved here, and it’s important to have a discussion about how we want to talk about our bodies.” I agree that discussing our bodies may be confidential but when an institution is targeting a group to help them, then those actions may be justified.

George Loewenstein, a professor of economics and psychology at Carnegie Mellon University who has studied behavioral economics and obesity, said the targeted email was “probably a mistake.”

Gray said the health center is rethinking how it will invite students to participate in the future (Wood 2015). I encourage all colleges, schools and institutions to continue to help students with weight loss and improve our health but just try to make invitations less offensive. Fat loss in college is not easy and being a student myself, I can share a few tips on how to lose fat in college.  First, I avoid eating out to fast food restaurants because they are expensive and the food doesn’t offer any nutritional value. I plan my meals out, then I cook at least 3 to 4 times per week. Next, I love running and boxing, so I find myself jogging 3 times per week and going to the gym to hit the bags for an hour as well. My last tip is to think positive about weight loss and find a partner to help you stay motivated. I understand college gets stressful at times but it is also very important to focus on weight management to live a longer, healthier life.

FDA Approves New Weight Loss Device for Obesity

Obese individuals struggling to lose weight now have a new FDA-approved weight loss treatment device, the Maestro Rechargeable System, which pinpoints the nerve passage between the stomach and the brain that controls your appetite (FDA 2015).

Maestro Recharchargeable System Weight Loss Device

The Maestro Rechargeable Device is a new FDA-approved device for weight loss. Photo by HNGN

Just like the recently FDA-approved weight loss drug Saxenda, this obesity device is for individuals 18 and over who have struggled to lose weight with a weight loss program, and who have at least one other obesity-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes. Diet and exercise are the most important factors for fat loss and this new device can make an effective combination in my opinion.

“Obesity and its related medical conditions are major public health problems,” said William Maisel, M.D., M.P.H., deputy director for science and chief scientist in the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “Medical devices can help physicians and patients to develop comprehensive obesity treatment plans.”

According to the FDA, the Maestro Rechargeable System consists of a rechargeable electrical pulse generator, wire leads and electrodes surgically implanted into the abdomen. This device is effective by sending intermittent electrical pulses to the trunks in the abdominal vagus nerve, which regulates the stomach in signaling the brain that the stomach feels full or empty. Patients can charge the device with external controllers and I believe it’s very convenient how health care professionals can adjust the settings.

How safe is the Maestro Rechargeable System?

In the clinical study, 233 patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or above received the device but the 157 patients who received the active devices lost 8.5 percent more excess weight after 1 year, compared to the 76 patients who received a non-activated Maestro electrical pulse generator (FDA 2015).

As a part of the approval, the manufacturer must conduct a 5 year post approval study to collect additional safety and effectiveness data. Serious adverse side effects reported were nausea, vomiting and complications from surgery. Other adverse effects included pain, problems swallowing, heartburn, chest pain and mild nausea.

With this new weight-loss device approved by the FDA, obese individuals now have a new option to combine with traditional diet and exercise.

The Maestro Rechargeable System is manufactured by EnteroMedics of St. Paul, Minnesota.

Lose Belly Fat With These Fat-Burning Foods

Losing belly fat and maintaining a flat stomach has always been a goal of mine so I took diet and exercise seriously. Consuming the proper fat-burning foods is important and David Zinczenko, best-selling co-author of the popular “Eat This, Not That!” series, has published a new book “Zero Belly Diet” in which I will discuss those belly fat-burning foods in this article today.

Fat-Burning Foods

Lose belly fat with these fat-burning foods and live a longer, healthier life.

Zinczenko created “Zero Belly” which aimed to reduce inflammation, stop bloating and shut down fat-storage genes (Zinczenko 2015). Belly fat is medically defined as “visceral fat”, which surrounds our guts and organs, pushing out our tummies. This type of fat is directly related to major health diseases such as type 2 diabetes, stroke, cancer, heart disease, liver disease and even Alzheimer’s.

According to Zinczenko, Zero Belly is based on the breakthrough science of “nutritional genetics,” which is the study of how specific foods trigger our fat genes to shut off or on. When Zinczenko put together a panel to test out the Zero Belly program, the average person lost 4 inches off their waist in just 6 weeks. This is quite interesting to me because those individuals lost weight fast without calorie counting or deprivation. The key was to develop a scientifically proven eating program that focuses on your fat genes. The Zero Belly program works in these 3 ways:

First, it reduces bloating by helping you slow down on extra salt, artificial sweeteners and dairy products. Next, it heals your gut by feeding the “good” microbes in your stomach. A balanced diet will decrease inflammation and help to shut off your fat genes. Last, it increases your metabolism with health fats, good dietary fiber and lean protein.

Lose belly fat with these 9 fat-burning foods:

Lean meat has been shown to maintain a high metabolism. These meats include lean beef, skinless chicken breast or white turkey.

Lean Meat Fat-Burner

Lean meats contain adequate protein which is essential for maintaining muscle mass. Clipart photo

Eggs contain a nutrient known as choline and researchers believe it shuts off the genes for visceral fat gain.

Beans, rice, oats and other dietary fiber can help the bacteria in your gut shut off genes for diabetes. I love oatmeal for breakfast and it’s a great way to begin your day plus satisfy your sweet tooth if you add sugar to it.

Red fruit such as apples are one of my favorite foods to eat. The darker the color, the more powerful they are at helping shut off obesity genes.

Olive oil and other healthy fats will help stop hunger cravings for up to four hours. I usually eat a high-protein diet in the mornings to keep my feeling full and curb my appetite throughout the evening.

Olive Oil Benefits

Olive oil has been shown to reduce the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, high cholesterol and even cancer. Clipart photo

Extra plant protein can be discovered in nuts and seeds like almonds, sunflower seeds or pecans and split peas or soy. I also like to add a plant-based protein powder mix to my fruit smoothies before and during my workouts.

The flavors and spices you like such as cinnamon, dark chocolate and even ginger can decrease inflammation and fight your fat genes.

Zero belly drinks”, drinks that are specifically plant-based smoothies that contain protein, fiber, healthy fat and resveratrol. You will find resveratrol in quantities in peanut butter, dark chocolate and red fruits which are all my daily favorites.

Green tea, bright vegetables, and leafy greens have been shown to decrease inflammation and help shut off fat-storage genes. I personally love bright, colorful vegetables because they add color and crunch to my meal plan.

Green Tea Benefits

Green tea contains catechins, which are antioxidants that fight and may even prevent cell damage. Clipart photo

Whole Grains Have Many Health Benefits

Whole grains have become one of my favorite fat-burning foods for weight loss because they have outstanding benefits such as lowering your blood sugar, redistributing body fat and helping to prevent obesity naturally. I like that fact that whole grains have become readily available in the natural foods that I purchase such as bread, pasta, rice and crackers. Don’t get me wrong, as much as you or I may love whole grains, too much is still not good for you.

Whole Grains Health Benefits The USDA recommends consuming grains on a daily basis including at least half of whole grains. Enjoy the amazing health benefits of whole grains including protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals plus other phytochemicals to improve your health.

Watch out for bread that’s brown and may look healthy, this could just be coloring with brown sugar or molasses. Since I recently switched to brown rice, brown eggs and other whole grains I pay close attention to the ingredients to make sure there isn’t anything artificial or bleached.

Fiber is one of the main reasons to consume whole grains. There are two kinds of whole grains, insoluble and soluble, that contain health benefits such as reducing the risk of colon cancer and controlling your blood sugar levels.

Studies have shown that individuals who consumed a lot of whole grains are more likely to maintain their weight and less likely to gain fat over a period of time than those who had eaten refined grains. Whole grains can help you control your weight by making you feel fuller longer than refined grains and they also take longer to digest. You reduce your calories by eating less and the fiber in whole grains acts as an appetite suppressant to help you lose weight.Evidence shows that eating a diet that contains fruits and vegetables plus whole grains without meat or processed foods can also help you lower your risk of cancer.

Did you know that carbs can be actually good for you? The key is the find the right type of carb and the resistant starch found in whole grains is one. It actually acts more like a fiber because it takes long to digest. It travels through your digestive system slowly while burning fat, maintaining your insulin levels and controlling your cholesterol levels as well.

I have recently changed my diet around a bit and included more whole grains, lean meats and low-fat dairy products to help speed up my metabolism. I eat a good source of fiber in the morning to suppress my appetite and control my hunger cravings during the afternoon so natural grains is a must for me. Usually a bowl of cereal or oatmeal along with wheat bread would be ideal for my quick breakfast.

When it comes to losing weight just eating whole grains alone will not make you lose weight. Dieting is only the first part of weight loss in controlling your calories by watching what you eat. Physical activity is the next step in losing weight and living a healthy life by improving your cardiovascular system and physique. Take advantage and include both diet and exercise for fat loss and watch how your health improves over the course of the year. Include whole grains in your diet today and receive the amazing benefits of weight loss, lowering your cholesterol and helping to prevent obesity naturally.

Ab Workouts for 6 Pack Abs

Ab workouts for six pack abs are more effective when you add dumbbells or free weights and you work those muscles harder when you add a few pounds to your abdominal exercise routines. Of course ab workouts and daily physical activity alone won’t get you a flat stomach faster when combined with a balanced diet but it will tone up your muscles for a sexy midsection. Today I will share my favorite ab exercises and fat-burning foods I use personally to get a flat stomach and 6 pack abs.

Ab Workouts for 6 Pack Abs

Ab Workouts for 6 Pack Abs

Leg Raises with Weights

I start off hanging on my exercise bar as if to do a pull-up, then I lift my legs up toward my chest while hanging from the bar with ankle weights. You can also use elbow straps tied to the exercise bar for support then have someone tie some weights to your body for more intensity. I love leg raises because they work the main parts of my abs including my obliques. Leg raises are definitely one of the top ab workouts which it comes to targeting your abdominals.

Crunches with Weights

You wouldn’t believe those crunches you learned in middle school are still the best when it comes to ab workouts and toning up. When you hold a dumbbell to your chest while performing a crunch you target a large part of your abdominals and build muscle mass faster with the extra weight added. Although crunches are simple ab exercises they are still effective when it comes to targeting the main parts of your abs.

Planks

Not only are planks effective when it comes to toning up your abs or midsection but they are very easy to do. Start off in the push up position with your hands on the floor beneath your shoulders. Hold that position for at least 30 seconds with your abdominals contracted, legs extended and your head aligned with your spine. Challenge yourself by going deeper and try the one-arm stable switching plank

The Hundred

This is a Pilate’s move that will surely engage your obliques and front and back core. This ab exercise definitely leaves my abs burning afterwards. Sit up straight on the mat with your knees bent by your chest and your hands at your sides. Lie down with your knees bent and the palm of your hands facing down. Exhale and raise your head and shoulders from the mat. Pump your arms 6 inches up and down, reaching out with your fingers. Inhale for 5 pumps, and then exhale for 5 pumps. Make sure to curl your chin in toward your chest. You can do 10 full breathes or 100 pumps. For best results, keep your lower back pressed against the floor mat and keep your lower abdominals sucked in toward your spine.

Fat-Burning Foods and Ab Exercises

Fat-Burning Foods for Weight Loss Combining fat-burning foods like lean meat, whole grains and low dairy products will help you burn calories fast. Whole grains such as brown rice and oatmeal (which is my favorite) that are rich in fiber, help you break down whole foods twice as faster than processed foods. I can eat brown rice every day and strawberry oatmeal in the mornings and never get tired of it. That’s just much I like these foods! They keep me full during the evening and I receive a good dose of nutrition as well. Yogurt is one of my favorite low-fat dairy products because it’s delicious, rich in calcium and vitamin D. Other benefits include preserving and building muscle mass which is important in maintaining a powerful metabolism. Lean meats such as chicken breast and fish are high in protein which helps you burn calories fast also. If you want to gain muscle mass along with your ab workouts then don’t be afraid to include high protein meals in your diet plan.   For beginners, adding weights to your leg raises, crunches or other ab workouts may be too much so you can start without weights at first. Then when you get use your ab workout routines, add weights to challenge yourself and continue to see those 6 pack abs develop. Combing a low calorie diet will help you lose stomach fat then the ab exercises when tone up your abdominals for that flat midsection. Don’t forget about the harmful health issues having that fat that surrounds your organs (visceral fat) include like stroke, heart disease and risk of cancer. Having belly fat is dangerous so take action today with these effective ab workouts and fat-burning foods to live a healthier lifestyle!

Fat Loss Tips for a Flat Stomach this Summer

by Leeman Taylor

Lose weight naturally this summer with these effective fat loss tips and get sexy 6 pack abs or a flat stomach for the beach.

Let’s all face it! We all desire that sexy beach body and want to lose weight effectively but in these busy times we usually don’t have the time or motivation to achieve our weight loss goals. Today I will share some quick fat loss tips to help you improve your physique and lose belly fat this summer.

Fat Loss for 6 Pack Abs

Lose belly fat for 6 pack abs

Reduce Stress and Lose Weight

Stress activates the cortisol hormone which feeds fat in our abdomen so stress is linked to obesity. My favorite method to reduce stress is exercises including cardio workouts like boxing or running. Boxing is my favorite sport so I love this hobby with a passion. I also like reading, playing video games, riding dirt bikes, meditation and relaxing with some good sleep. A study in 2012 revealed that stressed out parents is linked to childhood obesity because parents are more likely to eat fast food and make poor meal planning. Keep your stress levels down so you don’t activate the hormones that make you fat.

Plan Your Meals

A good idea would be to make a list of groceries for the week and plan healthy meals to prepare at home. This way you will save money, time and eat healthy at the same time. I work during the morning and evenings so I eat a heart healthy breakfast before work and bring me a small meal for lunch and dinner. I save a tremendous amount of money by not eating out and burning gas. I make sure my meals are low in calories but also nutritious to keep me fueled and energized during the day. An example of a meal would be tuna with wheat bread and an apple or a chicken breast sandwich with mac and cheese. Also Dr. Oz recently had a show about weight loss myths and it is recommended that you eat three meals per day instead of five to six small meals. Eating too much creates insulin that stores sugar and you don’t give your body time to actually burn fat.

Exercise for an Hour

Don’t waste your time or money with countless hours at a gym. Instead go for a jog or run at the park and visit your local Sports Authority store for exercise equipment. I go for a run in the morning or at night and use my exercise bar at home for my favorite weight loss workouts. The standard for daily exercise use to be at least 30 minutes of physical activity but in this 21st-century, it is now recommend that we get about an hour of daily physical activity for fat loss. Cardiovascular workouts like running or biking will burn the calories and strength training will tone those muscles up. My favorite exercises are dips, pull ups and old-fashioned push-ups. Obesity expert, Dr. Joel Fuhrman, says exercise is a great way to tone your muscles and improve your lifespan, but as a weight loss strategy, it is much less effective than dieting.

Get Good Rest

Getting a good night’s sleep rejuvenates our body and let’s our muscles and joints recuperate after intense workouts. Sleep is a good stress reliever and at least eight hours of sleep prepares us to take on the next day full force. Your muscles need rest after intensive workouts to repair themselves and increase in mass.

Set Small Weight Loss Goals

One of the biggest mistakes we make when trying to lose weight is setting high goals we know we can’t achieve and end of getting discouraged when we fail. Instead, set small fitness goals like losing five pounds this month and make small changes to your diet. This way you can track your progress and see slow but sure results.

Don’t Fall for the Hype!

Every day there is a new weight loss pill or formula that promises instant weight loss without diet and exercise. If this was true then everyone would be doing it right? The truth is that there is no magic pill or weight loss formula that will make you or anyone else lose weight fast. You have heard it time and time again; “You must follow a balanced diet and exercise daily to lose weight effectively and naturally.” Save your time and money to find a weight loss plan that only works for you. There is no one fat loss program that will work for everyone as we all have different body types.

For the most part, I really want all you ladies and gentlemen to live a healthy lifestyle and get that sexy body you always dreamed of. Losing belly fat and getting a flat stomach is not easy but the hard work will pay off when it’s all said and done. Follow these simple fat loss tips and get 6 pack abs for the beach this summer!

Venus Factor

Leptin Hormone

Since men and women are created differently, what works for men make not work for women because the metabolisms are not the. The one hormone that controls 100% of your body’s ability to burn fat is Leptin.  Basically, low levels of Leptin slow down your body’s metabolism and signal your body to store fat while high levels of Leptin speed up your metabolism and signal your body to burn fat. Although women have twice as much Leptin than men, they face two unfortunate issues that keep them from losing weight successfully. The first problem is Leptin resistance. Women can be three times less responsive than men to Leptin’s signal to burn fat. The second problem is an instant drop in levels of Leptin causing a weight loss plateau. When levels of Leptin decrease, your metabolism stops suddenly as well and slows down.
